He often said you have to have a certain play
between one and the other parts of whatever it is
you’re playing with. It has to give. If you don’t have
enough distance between the two objects of your
attention, then there is not play, no place for the
mind to make a discovery. It’s so vacuous, there’s
nothing to play about. I do know a lot about how
he was doing those things. I can’t apply it, but I
know it.
Q: Can McLuhan be learned?
